Since the 2000s, the northern New Territories has become the driving force behind large-scale development plans, fueled by the deeper integration between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Northern Metropolis Development Strategy which was launched in 2021, is expected to bring significant changes to the traditional walled villages and rural landscapes in areas such as San tin and the neighboring Ngau Tam Mei, as outlined in the development blueprint.
